Alternative Learning Experience overview

Is ALE right for me?

At ACES Alternative Learning Experience (ALE), Mukilteo School District teachers support students in independent, virtual learning, using PLATO online learning platform. Students meet with the teacher/advisor once each week in person at the Mukilteo Big Picture High School campus. This can be scheduled flexibly, and is an essential component. The in-person connection is central to the ACES ALE experience.

Key components:

  • This is a partnership between the student, the family, and the teacher/advisor at ACES ALE
  • Learning is primarily independent and self-directed, supported by families at home
  • Learning is asynchronous - NOT face to face, in real time
  • This provides flexibility, along with significant expectations
  • Enrollment is open at quarter and semester breaks, though we encourage students and families to contact us throughout the year to start planning

Designed for:

  • Students who prefer to work independently
  • Students with identified learning space and time at home
  • Families who desire greater flexibility

Not ideal for:

  • Students who want their teacher in front of them in real-time or like to work with peers
  • Students who do not have space and time at home
  • Students who struggle with motivation
